Cas du Vin
Treat yourself and your friends to some of the best wine in the world! This hand-selected collection of red wine from France encompasses the three great regions, Bordeaux, Burgundy and the Rhone.
- Top of class from each region
- Five each from Bordeaux and Burgundy and two from the Rhone's outstanding Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation
- Each of these wines has an aggregate rating of well over 90, with some in the stratospheric 95+ realm!
Bordeaux: 2013 Chateau Tertre de la Mouleyre St. Emilion Grand Cru, 2010 Gombande-Guillot Pomerol, 2001 Vieux Chateau Certan and two Grand Vin de Leoville St. Julien du Marquis de Las Cases, 1989 and 1999. Of the last two the notable French wine house Barriere Freres said,"For quite some time I've been dreaming about doing a vertical tasting of this legendary, though discrete, estate which many consider Bordeaux's most consistent purveyor of exemplary wines from the region (and therefore the world)." Now you can live that dream!
Burgundy: Two from Meo-Camuzet — 2013 Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru "Les Cras" and 2011 Grand Cru Clos de Vougeot; 2013 Corton Grand Cru from Domaine Follin-Arbelet, 2013 Domaine Chevillon Nuits St. George's "Les Cailles" Premier Cru, and 2012 Volnay by Arnaud Ente Premier Cru "Les santenots du milieu"
Chateauneuf-du-Pape: Two from 2013, called "the drinkers vintage," the best of the best: Vieux Telegraph, and Piedlong

Primo Vino!
Nowhere in the Western Hemisphere, or at least not at Kermit, K&L, Biondivino, Prima Vini or Buon Vino, can such a primo collection of the most outstanding expressions of the five great Italian wines — Barolo, Barbaresco, Brunello di Montalcino, Chianti Classico Riserva and Super Tuscan — be found, except right here at CalShakes' 2017 Gala! That's a non-alternative fact! These wines are absolutely at the top of their respective classes, with two scoring 100 points, several in the 98-99 range, and all of them in the mid-90s.
2013 Super Tuscans:
- Sassacaia, the wine that began it all in Tuscany. 98 average score of Robert Parker (RP), James Suckling (JS) and Wine Enthusiast (WE). "Fabulous structure, this is a wine of excellent execution, beautiful balance and seamless intensity."
- Cabernet Sauvignon Ornellaia, 96 RP "Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, an integrated and seamless blend of these grapes."
- Tignanello, the iconic Super Tuscan that was one of the early quality leaders in Modern Italian Wine and #8 on Wine Spectator (WS) list of the best releases (of all wines in the world) of the year.
2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riservas:
- San Filipe "Le Lucere," 100 JS and "A truly great wine."
- Biondi Santi Tenuta "Greppo" 100 WE, 97 JS, 96 RP (average price, if you can find it, is $500)
2012 Barolos
- Vietti "Lazzarito," another drop-dead gorgeous Barolo from Luca Corado
- Romirasco "Bussia," 97 JS
2013 Barbaresco: Angelo Gaja — Gaja's wines have a spellbinding intensity and power. The best [one of which this is] seem not simply great but virtually unreal in their ability to be massively opulent and yet finely etched at the same time. They are also gaspingly expensive." — WS
Rounding out the lot, for enjoying immediately, are these wines that are all rated well above 90 by RP, JS, WE, and WS:
- Two Brunellos, Val di Suga and Barbi of 2010
- 2012 Chianti Classico Riserva Castillo di Monsanto (the donor's favorite)
- Banfi Rosso di Montalcino
Salute!
